What Do You Call A Cat In Your Language?

Posted December 11th, 2009 by admin

In english we usually call a cat just that – a cat. Or a kitty, or puss. But we also call a female cat a “queen” and a male cat a “tom”. Do other languages have female and male names for cats and what are they (including english translations, as i am woefully ignorant of other languages)
Thanks!

    Dear Maia, good evening!
In Portuguese (from Brazil) we say:
    cat (male) : gato
    cat (female): gata
We also say, “bichano”, “chaninho”, and it is very sweet.
And, when a boy is very charming, handsome we say he is a “gato”!
I enjoyed the other answers – some were very funny for me!
