How Can My Friend Teach His Cat How To Go On Walks?

Posted December 16th, 2009 by admin

My friend wants to teach his big gray male cat how to go on walks with him, but it just wigs out as soon as they leave the apartment. Is there a way to teach a cat to just have a coke and a smile and enjoy walking around on a leash with his family?

Getting the cat used to the leash/harness is the first step. Do that at home where the cat is more confident. maybe just a couple mins at a time to start then for an hour, etc. Then add the leash and walk around the inside of the house, from there it should short walks in the yard and right back in then little by little the cat will be more comfortable outside on the leash. Rememebr there are a lot of scary things outside when you can’t run away. (A cat’s first line of defense)

kitty boot camp is the only way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
start with your left foot kitty ……….

Most cats really aren’t into the whole walking thing and it’s just as well because they can pick up alot more fleas and airborne diseases that way. Actually cats as a whole are hard to train because felines in the wild normally live solitary lifestyles and really aren’t use to following orders like a dog or wolf in a pack is. If your friend really wants something small to walk around tell him to get a chihuahua.

Not really, most cats have their own personality and most are not leash trainable. If the cat does not want to go for a walk on a leash why force him?

    Only kittens can be taught….

The leash needs to have a harness, not a collar. Any cat can slip out of a collar. First let the kitty play with the harness. Then get it to wear it, indoors. Finally, attach the leash and have a go at it. Just a walk around familiar outdoor space at first, staying within sight of home, then gradually extend it.
Some cats can be walked, others can’t, so your friend shouldn’t be too surprised if this doesn’t work.

I’m the friend…and fleas aren’t to be found in the Las Vegas deserts…if I was interested in chihuahuas I would’ve gotten one. Perhaps rather than waste people’s time you should go to trolling on some other forums. Or are the fleas now attacking your frontal lobes?
