I have a house gecko, lately it seems to be making calls at night, so I figured it to be a boy, you know, calling for a mate, but I am not sure. How can you tell if a house gecko is a male or female?

In most gecko species males have a row of pre-anal pores that are transparent and run vertically between the back legs, near the anal vent – females do not have these.
Additionally, males have 2 bulges at the base of their tail (near the anus), this is where their hemipenes are (they have 2 penis’s), females do not have these bulges, their anal area is flat.

Male house geckos do seem to be more vocal than females (often chirping at night to establish territories), but the above poster explains a more surefire way of deciphering your gecko’s gender

Male geckos have a have an upside-down “V” shape (which is actually a vent) in the general area, and a bulge right before the start of their tail. You can’t tell the sex of your gecko until they are six months old. Juvenile geckos all look alike.
