Our dog has noticeably started limping the last few days on her left front leg. We can’t tell is it is the result of chronic wear and tear, or if it is an acute injury, like a dislocation. Is there a reliable way to diagnose a dislocated shoulder in a dog without going to the vet? Would a dog be able to walk with a dislocation, albeit with a noticeable limp?

Think of when a person dislocates something.
I’ve dislocated my big toe and both shoulders. You can use them but there’s pain. Lots of it! You can’t use them as much but they still move and function.
There will be swelling and limping. Try touching or moving it and see if your dog is in pain.
Check under her paws maybe there’s something under it??

You didn’t say the size or age of your dog. It matters.
Or whether she’s done strenuous exercise lately or fell.
It depends where the dislocation is and how severe.
If mild, then some, but not much weight could be put on it, but noticably limping or avoiding weight,… 3-legged mostly.
Check her toes 1st and make sure 0 is in between it, like a pebble or cyst which may have formed.
Also check foot to make sure no cuts, slivers, etc. in pad.
She’s prob. in some discomfort,… but if anything’s broken then she would be in agony with absolutely no weight on leg.
    Hope this helps.

she should see the vet. If its a disloation, she needs a vet to re-set it anyways. If she has a torn ligament or something she may need an anti-inflamitory medicine.

There is only one way to be sure. Please,go to the vet! You owe it to the dog that loves you. There is no other way to find out unless you can see an injury. Even those can have hidden worse problems. Just as you’d take your child to the doctor, you owe to the dog to go to the vet.
