Sometimes the tuna for my sandwiches is cheaper than pet food. Should I buy it for my cat? When I open a can of cat tuna what’s inside is dark reddish brown. Chicken of the Sea is never that color. Why?
What’s The Difference Between “cat Tuna” And People Tuna?

It may be cheaper, but it is not healthy for your cat. The cat version has all the necessary ingredients added to it to make it healthy for the cat to eat it. The plain human tuna is lacking is important nutrients vital to a cat’s health… the most important being taurine. We eat a variety of foods, so our tuna is just plain tuna. The pet industry regulates what a cat needs and it is put into that can, assuming this is all the cat will be eating. A very rare treat of your COS will be okay, but not for general consumption by the cat. Even if your cat tells you it will love you forever, do not give it your tuna except on rare, special occasions.

People tuna is ok for a rare treat for cats, but it doesn’t have all the nutrients cats need, so don’t make it a regular food. Cat tuna may be a darker color from being from a different part of the fish, like the cheaper, less people-desirable areas. But kitties love it all the same! Don’t fret about what’s the ‘cheaper’ type of food. Feed your kitty what is best; 10 or 50 cents difference isn’t going to break you, and the better stuff will likely prevent health problems that cost way more!

Cats may be fine eating people tuna…but never the other way around.
White tuna is the best for people. Our cats enjoy some from time to time as well.
We do give them the “juice” from white people tuna.
Enjoy your cats. Patti

Since any food that comes in a can is cooked the “human” varieties – tuna, salmon, crab etc. does not contain taurine – an essential amino acid for the cat. Cats must get taurine directly from their food (humans and dogs make it from their food in their bodies) so taurine is added to all commercial cat food.
Tuna is not a good food for cats anyway. It is very addictive and a diet of that can lead to serious vitamin deficiencies in cats – even cat tuna.

Different (and more common) species of fish is usually used in cat food and people get the better cuts from albacore tuna.

People tuna includes more salt than a cat’s can of tuna, plus it’s packed in different fluid (do NOT give the oil packed kind). Tuna isn’t that good for them anyway, you should stick with regular canned cat food or dry.
