i’m 23 and i have a spider partial. its hard to keep it in but i was told that it was my only option since i had a lot of bone loss in my jaw. i was told that if i didn’t get it, the surrounding teeth would move and possibly loosen. but another dentist told me that spider partials were not legal in texas. i would appreciate as much insight into this matter as possible.

I have worked in Texas my whole career, and I have always been told that yes they are illegal in Texas. There is to much of a chance that a patient could swallow or aspirate one.

I’m not familiar with the Texas Dental Practice Act, but here in Kansas, a unilateral, or spider, partial is perfectly legal. There is an ADA approved insurance code for the procedure(D5281). As long as the prosthesis is made correctly, it can be used safely{I’ve done more than a few}, though there are other rrestorations that might be a better option in the long run, depending on the needs of the patient. Hope this helps.

I can’t imagine a spider partial being against the law. Someone’s misinformed.
